Lifted

In August of 2017, I hit the road with my brother and a friend to see the solar eclipse near Nashville. If you have never seen a total eclipse, do it. The sky dims to twilight in seconds. The birds fade out. The crickets fade in as the stars come to focus. It seemed like fingers twisting dials on a mixing board, which is how I spent most free time for several months, editing and mixing songs we recorded at my house the previous winter.Lifted

The band decided, at their peril, to let me produce our debut album, saving our limited funds for production and promotion. We recorded in my small living room, heated by a smaller wood stove, attempting to capture a raw and live moment in the band’s evolution.

Traveling to Tennessee, I visited our mastering engineer to get feedback before finalizing the mixes. We were days from completing the album. After the eclipse, we went into to Nashville to hear good music and enjoy that amazing city.

When we returned to our hotel, I realized my laptop and backup drive had been stolen from my car. These devices held the only copies of our final mixes. I felt a huge pit in my stomach. After several days, I finally found the nerve to tell the band.

They were more understanding than expected. We talked about re-mixing the original tracks, but felt too much time had passed since we tracked the first version. In the end, we decided to re-record everything. The album was supposed to be a moment in time, and the moment had passed.

Shortly after restarting, we knew we had made the right decision. The second version of Lifted is still a rough, live album, but it’s an album with a sense of direction that brings this varied collection of songs into better focus.

Thank you for listening. We hope you enjoy it.

LYRICS (in order of appearance)

“Caroline” (Buccino)

Oh Caroline, Oh Caroline
Keep your hand steady on the wheel
Mind the way you move
Daddy wouldn’t like it
If he knew the truth

Oh Caroline, Oh Caroline
Train your eye further down the road
Not too fast or slow
You've almost made it
Ain't far to go

A trooper on your tail
You’re much too beautiful to go to jail

Not too fast or slow
You've almost made it
Ain't far to go

“Knock the Man Down” (Dykeman)

When the wheel don’t move
But the road still runs away
Better knock the man down

When the river’s high
And the bridge is sitting low
Watch him when he falls down

Lost the way again
Down the path well-traveled
Someone’s in the road
That same old tramp
That stood there before

When the ground is cold
And the body’s lost its heat
Better knock the man down

When the wood is wet
And the winter wind is dry
Watch him when he falls down

Now it’s been said
Somebody’s in the way

But when the man comes down
Who do you think you’ll see
Standing in the road?

“World Comes Alive” (Buccino)

Before the dawn
Shadows breathe
All that's awake
Is a memory
Seems like weeks
Till day arrives
Gonna lay and wait
Till the world comes alive

Stars will hide
Shade grow long
And just like a whisper
It will all be gone
Will the sun say the moon
Was only a lie
Will the morning break
When the world comes alive

CHORUS
When the world comes alive
Music will fade
Silhouettes
Echo and sway
The darkness we knew
Wrong and right
Will all be ghosts
When the world comes alive

The swainson's call
The jarfly's cry
Will look on the world
With lonesome eyes
And you'll have a husband
And I'll have a wife
But that all can wait
Till the world comes alive

CHORUS

If we get old
Or the world ever ends
I'll see you the same
As you were back then
Then just as now
I think about you sometimes
When morning is new
And the world comes alive

CHORUS

TAG
The darkness we knew
The still of the night
Will all be ghosts
When the world comes alive

“Rake out the Nails” (Guthridge/Humphrey)

We raised those posts and beams
One at a time
Cut on the mark
And trued up to the line
Framed up with care and hope
A picture perfect home
Blueprints drawn up for two
But here I am alone

Drafts around the windows
Letting in cold air
Paint peeling off the walls
But I don't even care
Wore out those oaken boards
Walking the floor
Wondering where you've been
And what I'm waiting for

CHORUS
Cold iron nails
And white heart pine
Light a blaze
Say goodbye
Build a new love
Where the old one failed
Burn down the heartbreak
Rake out the nails

What holds me together
Will be the only thing that's saved
Take these walls and memories
And let 'em blow away
Nothing left to stay for
In this old shack
That old flame it burns out
As i strike a match

CHORUS

“The Ballad of Caulk’s Field” (Dykeman)

For a crown’s lost love
Peter heeds the call
So he left Marianne behind

A dark bird wheels
Off the portside bow
But Peter doesn’t turn around

So he left Marianne behind
And she sat there, restless, waiting for a sign

Darkness o’er the water
Glimmer on the shore
So he left the sea behind

And the shore took him in
It burned at his touch
And the flames rose up in his eye

But he left the sea behind
And he had no water to cool his fevered mind

Further in, further in, up to the ridge
He just keeps pushing that ledge
So he left his men behind

Sat a jealous lover
In a willow tree
Loaded up with buckshot, nails, and memory
But he left his men behind
And he had no shield against that angry line

Lying in the moonlight
On forbidden ground
The people gather to watch him go down

“Tell Me (How the World is Wrong)” (Buccino)

She got one steady eye
One dances 'round
Like a moth about a porch light
Litter on the ground
A freckled constellation
A beautiful mess
A tattooed frame with crossed out names
Each one she loves the best

Bright as a sunflower
Lean as tall
Reaching for the summer
Slumping into fall
Kiss like raw whiskey
Soft and mean
Memories of her exes and her
Double-wide dreams

CHORUS
Tell me how the world is wrong
When the light shines weak
And the drinks are strong
Tell me what it means for you to get along
You know I love a sad song

Laughing like those old times
Clinging like a tear
Swears on she's been missing me for
All these years
Who put the the lush in luscious
Or the 'I' in sigh
Who put all the good inside a
Good, goodbye

CHORUS

FINAL CHORUS
Tell me how the world is wrong
When the barlights flicker and the moment’s gone
Tell me what it means for you to get along
You know I love a sad song

“Dark Blues” (Dykeman)

There is a picture
Just like a song
With colors never seen and figures never drawn
If I could paint it, well there’d be something new
But I don’t have any brushes
And I don’t know how to see through this dark blues

There is a poem
That says itself
It’s made of all the secrets I keep from myself
If I could write it, well there’d be something new
But I don’t have any paper
And I don’t know how to see through this dark blues

Dig in
Well then tell me where the head leaves off
And where the hands begin

Eyes bright
Well then tell me how these heavy tools
Seem to block my sight

There is a sweet song
All high and low
It lingers at the back of everything we know
If I could play it, well there’d be something new
But I can’t see through this dark blues
So I’ll sketch the shadows through the glass
And leave the rest to you

“Streamliner” (The High & Wides)

I stood in the breadlines
Just north of Riverside
But what might fill the belly
Won’t satisfy the pride

Hustled and borrowed
Worked and Saved
Bought myself a ticket
On the B&O Rail

CHORUS
Streamliner
Northern Rail
Bear me on
For better days
No reason to stay
Streamliner
Take me away

Told Anna Lee we’d marry
When I found a home
She cried from the platform
To watch me go

What wonder is man
What miracles to prove
When all that steam
And steel begin to move

CHORUS

Five years I swung a hammer
In the Brooklyn Navy Yard
When Anna Lee got married
I took it pretty hard

Made a lot more money
Than I made in Baltimore
But how good is a living
If it ain’t worth living for

CHORUS

“Wide World” (Dykeman)

There’s a gentle breeze behind your eyes
And a hurricane in mine
Well that’s fine
But it makes a hard won love

All my words are buried under ground
Yours are floating in the sky
And that’s why
We don’t talk the same

Cause in this wide world
There is someone
Who looks just like you
When you see him
Just remember
He don’t know you like I do

Well your children have such fine ideas
Ours they never say a word
And I’ve heard
They don’t get along

All your travels take you far afield
But I’m still afraid to fly
Is this goodbye
Or could we connect sometime?

Cause in this wide world
There are others
Who look just like you
When you see them
Just remember
They don’t know you like I do

There’s a field with a line
Where we sing and march in time
Writing out the rhymes
That we’ll shout across our funeral pyre
And that field’s on fire

Cause in this wide world
There is someone
Who looks just like you

“Crescent Moon” (Buccino)

Lay like a skyline
Fall like a shadow
Sway with the willows
Smile like the gallows
Right all the wrong I done
Shine like a twilight bruise
Bathed in the light
Of a crescent moon

My sister nearly died
I prayed to the maker
Take me instead
And he did not forsake her
Years on years
Have gone since then
Ought to pay Him soon
Settled in the light
Of a crescent moon

Got ears that ring
Eyes that listen
A heart sweet as pruno
But violent as a prison
The song I've known
Is just a sliver of light
But I could never hold a tune
A faded night
Or a crescent moon

“Blue Driver” (M. Hurley)

Blue, blue driver
Rolling along
Searching the endless highway
For a shoulder to cry on
For a shoulder to cry on

Blue endless highway
Where do you come from
Blue endless highway
Where do you go
Where do you go

It don't make no difference
Where you go
I'm so doggone lonesome
Anyway I go
Anyway I go

CHORUS
Foot up upon the throttle
Watching the old smoke roll
Looking through the rear-view mirror
For the highway patrol
For the highway patrol

Made my coffee stop
And everything was wrong
That old waitress that I loved
She had come and gone
She had come and gone

That big old lonesome road
And the stars above
Take me and my old truck
To the one I love
To the one I love

CHORUS
